About Dr. Eyal Walter

Dr. Walter is an Israeli neuro-ophthalmologist who served as a battalion physician in Gaza during the early part of the Israel-Hamas war. Now back on duty at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, he has graciously agreed to relate his experiences by Zoom from his home in Israel.

A reserve officer in the Israel Defense Forces, he was drafted into service on October 7 and trained emergently in Tactical Combat Casualty Care (T3C), including hemorrhage control, intubation, tracheostomy, and insertion of chest tubes. He saw action in northern Gaza with his battalion of soldiers, witnessing some casualties.

Dr. Walter was born in Israel and educated at Hebrew and Ben Gurion Universities. With many honors for his scholarship and teaching, he has had faculty appointments at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem and Soroka Hospital in Beersheba. He spent a year in 2019 as a neuro-ophthalmology fellow at the University of Michigan under the mentorship of Jonathan Trobe, MD, who will be interviewing him in this special Zoom program.
